Whitewebbs Park: The Story So Far – Why This Enfield Green Space Continues to Divide Opinion

From proposed development plans and legal challenges to political pledges and community campaigns, Whitewebbs Park remains one of Enfield’s most talked-about local issues.

Few local issues have generated as much discussion, passion and debate in recent years as the future of Whitewebbs Park. Whether you’ve followed every development closely or are only just hearing about the story, Whitewebbs has become a focal point for wider conversations about development, green spaces, biodiversity, sport, public access and the future direction of Enfield. Following Enfield Council’s recent announcement that it intends to withdraw its defence in the ongoing judicial review case, many residents have been asking how we got here and what happens next. Here’s a look at the journey so far.

Whitewebbs

A Green Space at the Centre of Debate

Whitewebbs Park covers a significant area of green space in the north of the borough and has long been enjoyed by walkers, cyclists, nature lovers, dog owners and local families.

In recent years, proposals involving the former Whitewebbs Golf Course site have sparked intense public debate.

Supporters of the proposals argued that investment in the site could bring improvements to sports facilities, increased biodiversity management, investment into local infrastructure and opportunities for women’s and girls’ football.

Others raised concerns about the loss of open space, the impact on wildlife habitats, public access, biodiversity grassland and the long-term future of one of Enfield’s valued green spaces.

The Community Response

As the plans progressed, local campaign groups began to organise.

One of the most visible campaigns was led by the Guardians of Whitewebbs, a community group formed to challenge aspects of the proposals and campaign for the protection of the site.

The campaign attracted significant public support, raising more than £20,000 within days to fund legal action and eventually exceeding its original fundraising targets.

Residents, environmental groups, local organisations and campaigners became actively involved through petitions, public meetings, fundraising, social media campaigns and community events.

At the same time, others within the community expressed support for the proposed investment and questioned whether opportunities for sport and environmental improvements were being overlooked.

As with many major local issues, opinion across the borough remained divided.

Political Change Brings a New Direction

The issue took another turn following the 2026 local elections.

Before becoming Leader of Enfield Council, Alessandro Georgiou had publicly opposed development proposals affecting Whitewebbs and frequently spoke about protecting the site.

Following the change in administration, the council announced that it did not intend to proceed with signing the proposed lease arrangements connected to the development plans.

More recently, Enfield Council confirmed that it intends to withdraw its defence in the ongoing judicial review proceedings relating to Whitewebbs Park.

The move represents a significant shift in the council’s position and could have major implications for the future direction of the site.

Why Residents Continue to Care

For many residents, Whitewebbs has become about much more than a single planning application.

The discussions have touched on broader questions including:

  • Protecting green spaces for future generations
  • Biodiversity and environmental conservation
  • Access to public land
  • Investment in local sports facilities
  • The balance between development and preservation
  • Community involvement in decision-making

The strength of feeling on all sides demonstrates just how important local green spaces remain to many people across Enfield.

What Happens Next?

The legal process is still ongoing and the court will ultimately determine the next steps regarding the judicial review.

What is clear is that Whitewebbs Park continues to be one of the most significant local issues in Enfield, and one that many residents feel deeply passionate about.

As further developments emerge, we will continue to share updates and provide a space for residents to stay informed and join the conversation.
