The event was a huge success, with people of all ages coming into the town centre to explore local history, follow the trail, take part in the treasure hunt and discover some of the stories hidden in the streets we walk through every day.
The Enfield Society was highly visible throughout the day, welcoming passers-by, speaking with residents, gaining new members and sharing its important work in protecting and celebrating Enfield’s heritage.
It was a lovely example of what can happen when local history, community groups and the town centre come together. The trail encouraged people to slow down, look up, ask questions and see familiar streets in a new way.
Events like this are about more than one day. They help bring footfall into Enfield Town, support conversations about our heritage and remind us how much local knowledge, care and pride exists within the community.
A huge amount of work went on behind the scenes, from the Enfield Town Action Team supporting the idea, to Ozioma organising the trail, and the volunteers who gave their time on the day. The Enfield Society’s 90th anniversary was marked in a way that felt visible, engaging and truly rooted in the town.
John Cole from The Enfield Society described it as “a wonderful day” for both those taking part and the volunteers involved, thanking Ozioma, the Enfield Town Action Team and everyone who helped bring the event together.
Taking place on Saturday 8th August, from 12pm until 5pm, Hidden in Plain Sight is a free, family-friendly event that encourages everyone to slow down, look up and uncover the rich history that surrounds us.
The self-guided trail takes around 45 to 60 minutes to complete and leads participants to some of Enfield Town’s most interesting landmarks, historic buildings and hidden details that many people pass every day without a second glance.
Along the way, there will be interactive activities including Lost and Found Bingo, “look closer” clues and historical hints, making it a fun experience for both children and adults. Those who complete the trail will even receive a small prize at the finish.
Maps can be collected from The Enfield Society’s gazebo in Palace Gardens, located between Marks & Spencer and Pearsons, anytime between 12pm and 5pm.
The event has been organised by the Enfield Town Action Team as part of the celebrations marking 90 years of The Enfield Society, helping people connect with the town’s heritage while encouraging exploration of the town centre and supporting local businesses.
Whether you’ve lived in Enfield all your life or have only recently discovered the area, this is a wonderful opportunity to see familiar streets from a completely different perspective.
